PHI
The Centre for Healthcare at the Indian Institute of Management Udaipur (IIMU) has partnered with Basic Healthcare Services (BHS), a leading not-for-profit organization specialising in primary healthcare and to form the Primary Healthcare Initiative. The Primary Healthcare Initiative works towards improving the rural primary healthcare system.
The partnership brings together the expertise of the two leading institutions to promote better understanding of primary healthcare service, especially from a management perspective. The PHI aims to document such understanding and build on it in order to influence practice. The PHI also aims to influence policy.
Under this initiative we have worked together on various projects:
- Developing a demonstration and learning site for comprehensive primary healthcare in Aspur block, Dungarpur district. This was supported by UNICEF.
- Knowledge synthesis and perspective building on primary healthcare: We worked on synthesizing knowledge and building perspectives in primary healthcare through the development of four case studies and policy briefs on key areas: maternal care, midwifery, Health and Wellness Centers (HWCs), and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). This effort was also supported by UNICEF.
- Evaluating the impact of local influencers and microgrant on the adoption, value perception and utilization of health subscription cards. This project was supported by USAID.
- Equitable Healthcare Access Consortium (EHAC): Basic Healthcare Services and the Centre for healthcare are part of Equitable Healthcare Access Consortium, a network of socially driven healthcare providers. Through collaboration, resource sharing, and innovation, EHAC aims to develop new and improved models for equitable access to healthcare.

AECS
“The CFH has collaborated with Aravind Eye Care Systems (AECS). AECS is one of the largest ophthalmic service providers in India. Aravind , with its mission to ‘eliminate needless blindness’, provides large volume, high quality and affordable care. 50% of its patients receive services either free of cost or at steeply subsidised rate, yet the organisation remains financially self-sustainable. Much importance is given to equity – ensuring that all patients are accorded the same high quality care and service, regardless of their economic status. A critical component of Aravind’s model is the high patient volume, which brings with it the benefits of economies of scale. Aravind’s unique assembly-line approach increases productivity tenfold. Over 7.2 lakh eye surgeries or procedures are performed a year at Aravind, making it the largest eye care provider in the world.
CFH has worked with Aravind on follow-up adherence on ophthalmic NCDs”
